School
St. Rynagh's Primary School was opened in 1958 when a new school was built to replace the earlier Convent Primary School. This school was run by the L.S.U. sisters and catered for the girls of the town and also for the boys from infants to 1st class. The boys would then transfer to Banagher Boys' School in Cuba Ave.
In July 1973 the Convent School, Banagher Boys' and Garbally N.S. amalgamated to form St. Rynagh's Primary School and Mr. Tom Mc Gee became principal. In 1974 Shannon Harbour N.S. closed and pupils transferred to St. Rynagh's.
In 1975 an extension of the school was undertaken to cater for the increased numbers of pupils (340). The school then comprised of 8 classrooms, G.P. Room and staffroom. Due to improvements in the pupil/teacher ratio by the early 1980's 2 extra class teachers had been appointed so the G.P. Room was partitioned and used as 2 classrooms.
In 1991 one extra classroom was built to help alleviate the accomodation problem. Since then, the B.O.M. constantly lobbied the Dept. for improved accomodation.
In 1999 approval was given to proceed and the planning process commenced. Plans were drawn up for the extension and included a large G.P. Room, 2 new classrooms, Learning Support Teacher's Room and storage rooms. Other improvements included a multipurpose room, offices, a library, the old G. P. Room being converted into 2 permanent classrooms and all classrooms were upgraded to modern specifications including ensuite toilets. The entire building was linked by a corridor and included a new heating system, re-wiring, new furniture and equipment and an upgraded playing area. Work commenced on the 14th May 2001 and 8 classrooms were ready for occupation Sept. 2001.
In Dec. 2001 the rest of the building was handed over. Accomodation now consisted of 9 classrooms, Learning Support Teacher's Room, Library, G.P. Room, Principal's Office, Secretary's Office, Staffroom, Storage Rooms and Multipurpose Room.
A further classroom was added in 2005.
