Sport In St. Rynagh's Primary School

Apart from the implementation of the Physical Education Curriculum a variety of sporting activities is organised for our school. Each year we participate in competitions promoted by Offaly Cumann na mBunscol.

During the months of March, April and May the boys compete in the Division 1, Under 13 hurling competition. This year this event will involve teams from Kinnitty, Birr, Shinrone, Dromakeenan and Banagher. It promises to provide a most exciting series of games.

In March the girls participate in the I.N.T.O. Mini 7's football. In the Autumn the girls also compete in the Under 13 Division 1 (11-a-side) competition and the boys are entered in the I.N.T.O. Mini 7's hurling event.

The hurling team is managed and coached by Mr. Fergal McMahon and Mr. Tomás Flaherty. The girls football team is trained and supervised by Ms. Amy Heraghty and Mary Kelly who is chairperson of the Offaly Ladies Football Association.

Throughout the school year our school avails of different opportunities offered by sports organisations. In Spring Pieter Swanepoel, a native of South Africa, brings his coaching skills to pupils from 2nd to 6th class. Pieter is Youth Development Officer with Birr Rugby Club and is employed by the Leinster Rugby Union.

During the early months of the year the boys participate in the Indoor Hurling Tournament in Shinrone and the girls play in the astro-turf football event held in Tullamore. Both competitions are organised by John Leahy, the Offaly G.A.A. Coaching and Games Development Officer.

After St. Patrick's Day a hurling coach also organised by John Leahy, attends our school for a full day each week. In recent years David Hughes , a great stalwart of S. Rynagh's Hurling Club has been a most successful coach.
